Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
