European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international actions.
