Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
