The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brasilia, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to impose a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
