Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
