Six British Citizens Sentenced to Prison for One Million Pound Arson Attack on Storage Facility Holding Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid

Six Britons acting for the Wagner mercenary group linked to Russia have been handed jail terms for setting fire to a located in London warehouse that was storing humanitarian aid destined for Ukraine.

Sentencing and Roles

While delivering the sentences, the judge at the central criminal court stated that they had planned a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” to benefit the Russian state.

Dylan Earl was given a 17-year jail term with an additional six years on supervised release due to his “leading role”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was given 12 years in jail with an additional year on supervised release. The offences they admitted made them the first individuals to be convicted under the 2023 National Security Act.

Jakeem Rose, also from Croydon, was sentenced to a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, 23, a Thornton Heath, South London local, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment and Ugnius Asmena, who was homeless, was given seven years in prison. These three individuals were each convicted of serious fire-setting and given a further year on supervised release by the judge.

Ashton Evans drug dealer from Newport in Gwent, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment plus a further year on supervised release after being convicted of withholding details regarding acts of terrorism relating to another plot in the Mayfair area.

Incident Specifics

The arson attack on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London endangered sixty fire service personnel and caused one million pounds worth of destruction in March last year.

The proceedings revealed that Earl, 21 and the 24-year-old Reeves remained in their residences while organising the attack for the Wagner mercenary organization, representing the Russian Federation.

The individuals involved targeted the warehouse because it was being used to supply emergency relief and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the identical Ukrainian firm was hit by an intentional fire 10 days later in Madrid, investigators from the Metropolitan Police's anti-terror unit took over the probe.

Proof and Additional Schemes

When Earl was taken into custody, law enforcement examination of his cellphone uncovered he had videos of the warehouse fire being started and was in contact with the Wagner group on the Telegram messaging app, via an account with the handles ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike’.

Some of the messages indicated that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving fire-related incidents at a restaurant and wine store in Mayfair belonging to the Russian opposition figure Evgeny Chichvarkin had already been carried out. The use of explosives to harm structures was also deliberated.

Detectives found that the defendant Earl was also considering the possibility of kidnapping the dissident Chichvarkin and “sending him back to Russia to face prison”.

The individual involved in narcotics from Elmesthorpe, Leicestershire had discussed another potential attack in the Czech nation.

In a residence inspection, law enforcement found a flag of Russia, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine hydrochloride with a street value of approximately thirty-four thousand pounds.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The proceedings revealed he was a member of numerous channels promoting Russian propaganda and was driven by “plain and severe avarice”.

“This legal matter concerns the efforts of the Russian Federation to acquire harmful worldwide sway using social media to enlist saboteurs vast distances from Moscow.”

She found the arson attack had a “terrorist connection” irrespective of if the individuals responsible knew it. The Wagner organization is banned by the British authorities as a terrorist group.
