Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies pose an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a mere 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
