Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
